The two Porthcawl Swims I look forward to every year are, across the bay race in August and Coney Beach on Christmas Day.

I’ve missed a few bay swims but never a Christmas Morning one since my first one in 1979. In those early days I recall meeting up with all year round swimming stalwart Roy Morgan at the Manor Suite with barely 100 swimmers going into the sea, I know greet his son Mike who carries on his Dads tradition faithfully. Unfortunately my family are not as daft as me, but I love coming down for support and to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere and, see me collect another precious mug to add to my collection.

Another Christmas friend is Ian Stroud. A man I might not see for 51 weeks of the year, but I look forward to a handshake on the beach in the freezing cold as one of life’s treasures shared with many who are regular swimmers or spectators. I would hate to miss my Christmas Swim.

Finally congratulations to the swim Committee who have raised so many thousands of pounds which has gone to local clubs and organisations etc. and well done for turning this event from a small number of swimmers to thousands going into the water.

Happy Christmas Dai ‘Splash’ (Penybont Lifeguards)
